The margins on non GM canola look really good right now so if you can manage weeds you could make 20-25% more dollars per ac.
Clearfield canola yields a little less vs non CL varieties but you can still be far ahead of other canola returns. In my charts below I used about 8% less yield and 18% less yield to compare $ per ac. Canterra has a great new CL canola called CS 2800 CL available now with early booking and pre pay price deadlines on now. Even calculating lower yields on the CL canola you could be 20-25% ahead on net returns. If you are worried about weed control, a fall pass of glyphosate now can help for your perennial weeds like thistle and dandelion, and also using Edge can suppress kochia and wild oats in season. Keep in mind you need to have the edge at the level of the weed seeds to work. We use a heavy harrow with a Valmar on it. Canterra also has FFC financing that allows for 0% until October 1 2023! Johnstons Grain & Viterra are looking for this type of canola.

We sampled our demo plot field with our spring cereals including soft wheats, barley, oats on it. We have taken silage samples for yield and also TDN and more at the medium dough timing for each of these spring crops. Below this chart we have the fall crops silage data from this same field. Blair Balog our Seed Specialist has compiled the spring crop forage information in a chart for you to make comparisons from variety to variety and crop type. This in not replicated or scientific data, just side by side on small scale as we cut a 3'x10' spot and sent a sample to Down to Earth Labs to get these results. The CDC Arborg Oat data was not in the plots, but was near by from our main field as our filler crop, so may not be as comparable. CDC Renegade Barley was at a lower use rate and farther away from the plots so also may not be directly comparable. We missed taking the AC Sadash VB sample. The plots were seeded April 28th, 2022 on irrigation and the wheats were seeded at 40 plants per square foot and the oats and barley at 30 plants (other than the CDC Renegade at about 20) Blair Balog: Cell: 403-634-4349 (calls & text) Office: 403-739-2233 Email: [email protected] Bigger images of these charts are located here https://www.stampseeds.com/forage-trials.html
For more detailed feed analysis, email [email protected] We are over 90% harvested now (ahead of normal) and about 40% done seeding fall crops with the big push on for our last 2 fall crop varieties.
Our spring crop forage trial data is back and included below. We just took our grain yield trials off for winter crop and spring crops so will need a week or two to get the grading and all of them into spreadsheets. Can I Seed Fall Crops Into Dry Soil? We have some dryland acres that we planted fall rye and it is very dry. We plan to seed into dry soil at 3/4 inch and wait for rain or snow to come in october to germinate it. There is some risk doing this but we feel that a fall crop can tolerate dry conditions the best with good net returns. Even if little moisture comes it grows slow at this point of the year so does not need a lot. Fall Crop Seeding Dates We often are asked how late can I seed fall crops? AFSC crop insurance had a deadline in the past but now don't (details here) but we still generally follow the recommended practices like before. (Although if the forecast looks good we will stretch these a little bit.) Recommended last seeding dates:
Main fall crops for sale AAC Wildfire winter wheat KWS Serafino hybrid fall rye
AC Hazlet fall rye Metzger fall triticale We can quote freight for you if needed. Fall Crop Net Returns Thanks to a few customers we regularly get comparisons of fall rye to winter wheat and generally we see about a $50-$100 per ac advantage to the hybrid fall rye due to increased yields. There is some ergot risk with the rye as rye is more prone to having ergot but that can be mitigated with even & early seeding. I have some net return charts lower in this email as well as a rye buyers list, a lot of rye has been going to the feed market. Cover Crops For Fall & Government Funding Below in this email, Blair has compiled some key points from the On Farm Climate Action Fund and how to qualify. Some people use traditional fall rye as a cover once hills are formed in potatoes by spreading on, others are seeding barley between their bean windrows and having good luck reducing erosion. Rye, Winter Wheat, Barley, Daikon Radish, Clovers, Italian Ryegrass and more is available. Let us help you plan a rotation/ cover that works for you and look below for some possible funding for seed. University of Lethbridge Career Fair Greg will be attending the U of L Career Fair this week on Thursday September 22nd so if you have family or friends attending tell them to stop in at our booth! Corn Yield Trials Blair has a number of grain and silage corn trials this season so expect to see trial data from him in a few weeks. December Seed Update We plan to host our fall seed update meeting December 1st with more details to follow. For any seed bookings you can call Blair Balog at 403-634-4349 (calls & text) Office: 403-739-2233 Email: [email protected] We have been seeding some fall crops now, lots of winter cereals have shipped with more to go yet!
There is still good time to take advantage of the early harvest to seed a fall crop for grain or forage. If you need freight we can get quotes for you. We have tote bags of KWS Serafino prepared with 28 unit (35 ac) & 40 units (50 ac) per bag. Our big sellers have been AAC Wildfire winter wheat & KWS Serafino hybrid fall rye. We also have KWS Propower hybrid fall rye, AC Hazlet fall rye & Metzger fall triticale. Grain Yield Trials We will be harvesting our fall and spring crop yield trials soon, so far the combines have not had enough time between crops to take them off. We will see weathering response as well with the plots having some rain on them. Winter Pea We seeded a winter pea plot on Sept 3rd - part demo, part seed multiplication. Hopefully in 2 seasons we will have some for sale. It is on canola stubble mainly because of crop rotation on our other open fields. See winter pea picture below. |
