We have been seeding some fall crops now, lots of winter cereals have shipped with more to go yet!
There is still good time to take advantage of the early harvest to seed a fall crop for grain or forage. If you need freight we can get quotes for you. We have tote bags of KWS Serafino prepared with 28 unit (35 ac) & 40 units (50 ac) per bag. Our big sellers have been AAC Wildfire winter wheat & KWS Serafino hybrid fall rye. We also have KWS Propower hybrid fall rye, AC Hazlet fall rye & Metzger fall triticale. Fall Crop Net Returns Thanks to a few customers we regularly get comparisons of fall rye to winter wheat and generally we see about a $50-100 per ac advantage to the hybrid fall rye due to increased yields. There is some ergot risk with the rye as rye is more prone to having ergot but that can be mitigated with even & early seeding. A lot of rye has been going to the feed market. Fall Crop Seeding Dates We often are asked how late can I seed fall crops? AFSC crop insurance used to have a deadline but now don't (details here) but we still follow the recommended practices like before. Recommended last seeding dates:
Grain Yield Trials We will be harvesting our fall and spring crop yield trials soon, so far the combines have not had enough time between crops to take them off. We will see weathering response as well with the plots having some rain on them. Winter Pea We seeded a winter pea plot on Sept 3rd - part demo, part seed multiplication. Hopefully in 2 seasons we will have some for sale. It is on canola stubble mainly because of crop rotation on our other open fields. See winter pea picture below.
