The numbers are in for our HRSW yield trial! These plots sat though some rain for about 4 weeks, giving us the "opportunity" 😬 to learn grade retention information from this trial as well.
At the bottom I have a link to our trial results. Immediately below I have a link showing varietal management research (1 site and 1 season only) that shows how far you can push CDC Landmark VB and Viewfield above other varieties. Data on Viewfield & Landmark VB management Dr. Sheri Strydhorst AAC Viewfield HRSW This variety has been doing very well for the majority of those who tried it this year and was our best selling variety last season. AAC Viewfield HRSW and Landmark will generally share top yield place. Viewfield is short so we can push seeding rates higher and get more heads per square foot. It has a great disease package (MR to Bunt and Leaf Rust) but does need seed treatment as it is susceptible to Smut. FHB is rated Intermediate but the ratings chart changed between the registration of some older varieties such as Brandon and these new varieties, so I have been told it has similar FHB tolerance as Brandon. Sprouting rating is Good on Viewfield vs. Elie's Fair rating and Brandon's Poor rating. To maintain protein with high yields extra fertility and or slow release fertility may be needed. A few customers in the Brooks area saw some bacterial streaming and it impacted yield. For those customers I am suggesting CDC Landmark VB . Viewfield does very well under high management. We had a customer near Viking with 11% more yield on Viewfield vs. Brandon in 2018 (and he said the Brandon had more rain) At the top of this email I have data from 2017 showing up to 21 bu per ac over Brandon with intensive management. CDC Landmark VB This variety is new for us this season. It is a varietal blend and the refuge (10%) is Viewfield. Landmark has midge tolerance and also has slightly solid stems so it may have some resistance to wheat stem sawfly. It is taller than Viewfield but actually stood better in 2018. It has parents that include Superb, protein at check, very good sprouting rating, MS for bunt, R for stem rust, MR for stripe and leaf rust. Like the Viewfield FHB is rated Intermediate but the ratings chart changed between the registration of some older varieties such as Brandon and these new varieties, so I have been told it has similar FHB tolerance as Brandon. Sprouting rating is Good on Viewfield vs. Elie's Fair rating and Brandon's Poor rating. Landmark also does very well under high management (PGR's, Fungicides at GS 32 and flowering timing) At the top of this email I have data from 2017 showing up to 18 bu per ac over Brandon with intensive management. AAC Elie Elie has been our best seller for about 5-6 years and some farmers still like it for its stand ability and yields. We have been transitioning to Viewfield and Landmark as they are a step up in yield, stand ability and sprouting ratings AAC Redberry Redberry has parents of Stettler and Glenn and is a short/medium season variety. It has slightly weaker straw than Elie and slightly taller. Good disease package for FHB and Smut and all rusts. CDC Go High yield and early maturity but poor grade retention, sprouting and disease package. We have a small amount of it remaining so if you need this variety let me know. CPS SY Rowyn CPS This CPS Wheat is unique with marketing like a HRSW and some drought tolerance so I had to sneak it into this email also. :) Patterson and P&H elevators are paying slightly less than HRSW for this variety and have special contracts out for SY Rowyn. It will yield about 12% more than a HRSW on irrigation and up to 20% under dry conditions have been observed. Let me know if you have questions and if i can get you a price. We do have our pre pay discounts on now until Dec 14th 2018. Greg 403.634.1586
