 Hybrid fall rye has become a mainstay of our winter crop sales the past few years. With yields 20-40% over traditional fall rye and winter wheat many farms have found a place to try hybrid rye.
KWS Daniello KWS Daniello is a great new variety that has the lowest ergot risk of all the hybrid rye on the market while still maintaining yield (or even better yield than Guttino). Falling number may be slightly lower than Guttino. Daniello has lower ergot risk because of the pollen plus trait and also genetic factors of the variety. This variety may save you from a cleaning cost or downgrading to reduce ergot levels. Even if you only had ergot levels of concern once in 5 years it would still pay to be growing Daniello. KWS Propower We may have a small amount of the new Silage / Forage / Feed variety called KWS Propower available to try this fall. Seed production was grown in the US so we do not know when it will arrive here or if it will arrive on time this fall. Propower should yield roughly 10% or more over varieties like Guttino & Daniello for forage and will have increases in grain yield as well assuming the feed market is the target. Forage Use Farms using hybrid rye for forages have started seeding early in the year (May - June), grazing multiple times, overwintering, and grazing and then silaging the following season. The hybrids recover much faster, tiller out more than traditional lines and can take more stress and still preform. The Fine Print Hybrid fall rye is sold by the unit. 1 unit is 1 million viable seeds. You seed 0.8 of a unit per ac (800,000 viable seeds per ac). Hybrid fall rye is a one time use product and seed cannot be saved back. In crop costs are usually low as no wild oat herbicide or fungicide is needed.

I was talking to some grain buyers and thought I would send out some info on SY Rowyn to keep you in the loop. For those of you who grew SY Rowyn CPS wheat this season Patterson and P&H locations have a special milling program for it. I talked to P&H (Barrie Woods at Medicine Hat 403-866-9415) and they had been paying $0.20 less than HRSW. Planning for next season, this variety has done 12-15% better than HRSW on irrigation but also has drought tolerance and will do about 15-20% better than HRSW under dry conditions. Its a good option to spread your risk for markets from other wheats. See below for a comparison to other wheat for net returns. Another option is the feed market with this higher yielding variety.
