Yield Trials

Forage / Silage Crop Trials

2025 Double Cropping Trials

Blair planted three different types of oats and forage sorghum after taking hybrid rye plots at milk stage timing, this was to mimic what a producer would do in his field. He planted CDC Byer, our new milling and double crop oat for 2026 against AAC Wesley and CDC Haymaker. Both CDC Byer and AAC Wesley have resistance against barley yellow dwarf virus, a disease that really took hold of double crop oats in 2024, some in 2025. CDC Haymaker is a traditional forage oat, is long season so not typically used for double cropping but can be used in a pinch. CDC Byer has a higher grain yield over AAC Wesley, this is why we switched to it.

CDC Byer is a day behind AAC Wesley for heading timing, but with its higher grain yield, will see higher forage yields.

Forage Sorghum continues to win the double cropping plots, but is behind oats for maturity which could prove to be a issue if there is an early frost in the fall

Each plot was planted plant on June 27th,2025 and taken off on September 16th,2025

2025 Fall Crop Forage Results
Hybrid Fall Rye
Boot stage cut - Taken on May 26th, this cut is for top quality. Serafino did very well at this stage.
Milk Stage cut - Taken on June 26th, this cut is for good quality but top tonnage potential.

Winter Triticale
Milk stage cut - Taken on July 9th, this is taken for really good quality and top tonnage potential. Tadeus continues to be a stand out for silage
EXP 209 is new this year, is an awnless variety that brings in exciting possibilities for greenfeed or silage depending on what the producer needs!

Winter Wheat
Soft dough cut - Taken on July 25th, this cut is for top tonnage potential. All three varieties did very well in this trial, Wildfire edged out Coldfront for the top. Most are switching away from winter wheat silage with fall triticale doing so well

Our fall crop demo plots have hybrid fall rye, fall triticale and winter wheat varieties seeded. The hybrid rye was at 1 of a unit per ac (roughly 23 plants per square foot. The fall triticale was planted at 25 plants per square foot and winter wheat was planted at 40 plants per sq foot

This in not replicated or scientific data. It is side by side on small scale as we cut a 3'x10' spot from even spots in our yield trials and sent samples to Down to Earth Labs for moisture corrected results and basic nutrient comparisons.

2024 Fall Crop Forage Results

Hybrid Fall Rye
Boot stage cut - Taken on May 28th, this cut is for top quality. Serafino did very well at this stage.
Milk Stage cut - Taken on June 26th, this cut is for good quality but top tonnage potential. Serafino and Cossani both did very well at this stage.
Opportunity cut from regrowth from boot stage - Taken on July 24th, this is a opportunity cut from the regrowth coming from the boot stage cuttings. This is one that can be done on the plots because we continue to water after I take the boot stage cut. Serafino did great at this stage yet again!

Winter Wheat
Soft dough cut - Taken on July 15th, this cut is for top tonnage potential. All three varieties did very well in this trial, wildfire and overdrive tied at the top

Winter Triticale

Milk stage cut - Taken on July 4th, this is taken for really good quality and top tonnage potential. The Trical varieties did very well but Blair had to take them in a different way since the plots were smaller. Biggest surprise out of this was the Tadeus 30 plant target out performing the 40 plant target

Tadeus! - We had a customer average 21.9 MT/acre on one field and just over 20 MT/acre on another. This has a lot of potential to it!

Our fall crop demo plots have hybrid fall rye, fall triticale and winter wheat varieties seeded. The hybrid rye was at 1 of a unit per ac (roughly 23 plants per square foot. The fall triticale and winter wheat was seeded at 40 plants target rate.

This in not replicated or scientific data. It is side by side on small scale as we cut a 3'x10' spot from even spots in our yield trials and sent samples to Down to Earth Labs for moisture corrected results and basic nutrient comparisons.

2023

Double cropping - What is better oats or forage sorghum?
These oats and Forage Sorghum plots (see results below) were seeded on June 2nd allowing for long season double crop options.
The oats were taken off on September 1st when they reached soft dough stage. The plan for the forage sorghum was to wait to take if off until a frost event occurred, which happened on October 13th.
The forage sorghum responded well to the frost; leaves crisped up but still stayed green and had mass. The results showed that a grower could keep it in the field well into the fall for fall grazing or for swath grazing, or silage.

Here is the link to the forage data taken for boot stage cut May 23rd 2023 of hybrid fall rye to compare what your combined totals could be as we planted this following boot cut.
Winter Cereals Forage Trials

If you take an average yield of 8 mt (at 35%) at boot cut of the hybrid rye, plus either the 10 or 23 mt of the sorghum or oats you could be between 18-31 mt per ac. I think a soft wheat could also be an option seeded early June for forage after boot cut timing.
Another option is to wait until milk stage to gain more rye yield and then follow with oats or sorghum.

If you are looking for a forage or grazing option, forage sorghum could be a good fit on farm. If you are interested in something that you can seed and get off the field quickly, oats may be your best option.

2023 Fall Crop Forage Results
We took silage samples at the milk stage on June 23rd in the fall rye and winter triticale. In the milk stage cut Performer (2024 launch) showed well as did KWS Serafino (available now), see details below.
We had reports of some customers Serafino irrigated silage yields coming in about 20-22 MT per ac in late June and they will be seeding oats behind it for forage.

Winter wheat was taken at the soft dough stage on July 7th,2023. AAC Coldfront (2024 release) did very well with AAC Wildfire right behind it.

Blair had a opportunity cut on our Hybrid fall rye plots, a second cut where the boot stage cut was taken. Results are below!

Our fall crop demo plots have hybrid fall rye, fall triticale and winter wheat varieties seeded. The hybrid rye was at 0.8 of a unit per ac (roughly 18 plants per square foot. The fall triticale and winter wheat was seeded at 40 plants target rate.

This in not replicated or scientific data. It is side by side on small scale as we cut a 5'x10' spot from even spots in our yield trials and sent samples to Down to Earth Labs for moisture corrected results and basic nutrient comparisons.

2022 Stamp Seeds Forage Fall Crop Yield Trial Data
We had our demo plot field with all of our cereals including fall rye, winter wheat, soft wheats, barley, oats on it. We have taken silage samples for yield and also TDN and more. Blair Balog our seed specialist has compiled the fall crop forage information in a chart for you to make fall crop seed booking decisions with. Grain data will come when we have it. This in not replicated or scientific data, just side x side on small scale as we cut a 3'x10' spot and sent a sample to Down to Earth Labs to get these results.
