The biological marketplace seems to be expanding exponentially and Upstream Ag Insights had a good summary to this article link: https://mixingbowlhub.com/ag-biologicals-landscape-2023/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

Many people are growing VB (Midge Tolerant) wheat now and this year it looks like it may be of value in areas where rains have come in June. Take a look a the provinces midge maps.

Alberta's winter cereals agronomy program has been canceled. I know I have learned a lot from its research and used its information with our customers. This will be a big loss for winter crops. Read more here.
We have talked to a few customers and agronomists who have mentioned field preparation was more important that they first thought. They noticed that a tillage with harrow packer pass allowed for better germination and more even crop.
If the fall crop seeding is early enough it may make sense to spend time to make sure there is not heavy residue in spots from combines stopping, water up volunteer barley or hailed crop and make sure you can kill it before your fall crop is seeded or is up. We have a new forage sorghum called GW-2120 available with good standability after frost and is very palatable:

On tougher years it would allow for more loss before a crop is unfit and help tillering seeding September 10th onward in S AB or Sept 1 onward in other areas. If seeding late August 0.8 of a unit may still be ok as it will have time to tiller.
We took silage samples at the milk stage on June 23rd in the fall rye and winter triticale. In the milk stage cut Performer (2024 launch) showed well as did KWS Serafino (available now), see details below.
We had reports of some customers Serafino irrigated silage yields coming in about 20-22 MT per ac in late June and they will be seeding oats behind it for forage. Our fall crop demo plots have hybrid fall rye, fall triticale and winter wheat varieties seeded. The hybrid rye was at 0.8 of a unit per ac (roughly 18 plants per square foot. The fall triticale and winter wheat was seeded at 40 plants target rate. Winter wheat will be taken at the dough stage in the coming weeks and all will also be take to grain yields this fall. It is side by side on small scale as we cut a 5'x10' spot from even spots in our yield trials and sent samples to Down to Earth Labs for moisture corrected results and basic nutrient comparisons. So a heads up to our AAC Chrome pea customers. We will also be launching the new CDC Hickie and AAC Beyond Yellow Peas this season as well as have 5000 bu of CDC Lewochko carried over. Bacterial blight has been reported in some areas, details can be found here: report-of-bacterial-leaf-streak-on.html
The dry season may benefit that problem. The PCDMN also has reports on Rust, Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus and more if you click the home button on the link above. KWS Serafino Hybrid Fall Rye - ready to ship
