Below: KWS Sarafino hybrid fall rye seedWe are about 40% done harvest but a few showers this week have slowed us down. Sales of fall crops has picked up after recent rains. Our cleaning plant has been running constanty, as all of our Hybird Fall Rye is cleaned, AAC Wildfire Winter Wheat is clean and we will be starting on AAC Network Tuesday. We have started seeding fall rye on dryland (traditional type) and will move to our hybrid after that. For us this could be a week too early but we had the people available and it rained! This email has a few different points:
Winter Wheat vs Hybird Rye I talked with a customer who grew AAC Wildfire winter wheat and Hybird rye. He had 35 bu winter wheat and 68 bu KWS Serafino Hybird Rye this season. If selling into the feed market you will be discounted for the rye but the yield difference is quite big and costs to grow are fairly similar this season. This makes the rye very attractive as I think there is a difference of $240 per ac with those yields into the feed market. The key is to seed your rye a week earlier vs winter wheat so it can tiller out. Oats or Rye for a Cover Crop We have Oats and Traditional Rye on hand. Some people are using oats after beans or other crops that leave the soil bare. Oats allows maximum rotation flexibility as you can go to any crop next. Rye is used by some so have green cover in the spring as well but if going to a cereal you need to make sure it is fully killed off so you have no surprises in your cereal crop. Some try to get these covers on as soon as possible (spread before harvest or after windrowed or right as you harvest) Fall Crop Seeding Dates For people not grazing, Aug 20th in the central regions and Aug 25th in the South is the earliest we typically see fall crops seeded. Hybrid Rye does better with time to tiller out in the fall. Crop insurance deadlines for fall crops is Sept 20th North of the Bow River and September 30th South of the Bow River. A flyer listing the options of fall crops is lower in the email and you can take a look here: Hybrid Fall Rye or Winter Wheat We can price and organize seed (including treated seed) delivered to your yard if needed. Why do we stress the importance of fungicide and insecticide treated winter crops? Take a look at Dr. Brian Beres research on winter wheat: Seed treatments on winter wheat article New Winter Wheat Launching This Fall AAC Network launches this fall. It should yield about equal to AAC Wildfire. We are taking bookings now. AAC Network has:
AAC Wildfire is still available and has VG winter hardiness with top yields Winter Wheat Buyer: Jules Beauchemin, jules@moulinsdesoulanges.com , office: 450-265-3005 Jules is with Les Moulins de Soulanges inc (mill) in Quebec and he is looking for around 1000 MT to 2000 MT of commercial AAC Wildfire or AAC Network by container and cleaned, but can handle railcar and can clean there. If nothing else it may be a nice outlet for next season if you do not have supply this year. New Hybrid Rye Launching This Fall KWS Serafino officially launches this fall after a soft launch last season.
KWS Daniello is still available and has VG winter hardiness with top yields and is a nice flex variety for grain or forage KWS Propower Hybrid Fall Rye for forage use. Information on feed use studies, forage use studies and agronomy research, details here. How are some customers using Hybrid Fall Rye as a forage?
Fall crops use moisture earlier in the season, provide weed competition and typically avoid heat blasting and fungicide issues such as FHB. Forage Crops
Winter Triticale Seed We have not done very much with Winter Triticale in the past and usually have some people asking about it. We did source 1800 bu of Metzger Winter Triticale so if you need it let me know. Below: AAC Network winter wheat

I have talked to many people across Western Canada and the majority of them have very poor crops. We are 25% done harvest with no slow down in sight. Our dryland crops were very poor. The crops that have been the best ones were the March seeded peas (may have caught an additional rain vs the rest) and the fall rye. (all was poor) The Irriagted crops are maturing fast. I have a guide on desiccation timing at the bottom of the email. We are cleaning Daniello rye now and then will move to Propwer rye, Serafino rye, Network winter wheat and then Wildfire winter wheat. Fall Crop Bookings Right now there are a number of farms on the fence about fall crops but if a rain comes there could be lots of acres booked. If you are going to graze the crop you could seed now. If not the earliest you may want to go with a fall crop is Aug 20 in the central regions and Aug 25 in the South. Hybrid rye does better with time to tiller out in the fall.
