Fall Rye Seed & Winter Wheat Seed

Thanks for joining our summer tours, it was nice to visit with everyone!

I have talked to many people across Western Canada and the majority of them have very poor crops. We are 25% done harvest with no slow down in sight. Our dryland crops were very poor.  The crops that have been the best ones were the March seeded peas (may have caught an additional rain vs the rest) and the fall rye. (all was poor) The Irriagted crops are maturing fast. I have a guide on desiccation timing at the bottom of the email.
We are cleaning Daniello rye now and then will move to Propwer rye, Serafino rye, Network winter wheat and then Wildfire winter wheat.

Fall Crop Bookings
Right now there are a number of farms on the fence about fall crops but if a rain comes there could be lots of acres booked. If you are going to graze the crop you could seed now. If not the earliest you may want to go with a fall crop is Aug 20 in the central regions and Aug 25 in the South. Hybrid rye does better with time to tiller out in the fall. Crop insurance deadlines for fall crops is Sept 20 North of the Bow river and September 30th South of the Bow river.

New Winter Wheat Launching This Fall
AAC Network launches this fall. It should yield about equal to AAC Wildfire. We are taking bookings now. 
AAC Network has:

• Top yields
• Shorter season vs wildfire
• Good winter hardiness
• High protein (good AAC Gateway replacement)
• Shorter stature vs AAC Wildfire with better lodging resistance
• I rating to FHB

AAC Wildfire is still available and has VG winter hardiness with top yields

New Hybrid Rye Launching This Fall
KWS Serafino officially launches this fall after a soft launch last season.

• Top yields
• Low ergot risk
• Improved standability
• VG winter hardiness and falling numbers

KWS Daniello is still available and has VG winter hardiness with top yields and is a nice flex variety for grain or forage

How are some customers using hybrid fall rye as a forage?

1. Seeding in the spring and grazing multiple times that year and then using again the next year for grazing or silage
   • Blending with a spring silage crop so it regrows after
2. Seeding in the fall
   • Silage at boot stage for a high quality high protein crop (late may)
     • The rye will regrow for a second cut or more grazing as its taken before flowering
     • Spray before cutting and then seed oats or barley in early June for a silage crop or grain crop if you have the season. (spray it so don't get random vol rye as can be prone to ergot on own)
   • Silage at milk stage late June to early July (don't want to leave longer as loses nutrients and becomes hard to cut and pack and wont gain more yield)
     • can re plant to oats for forage (barley doesn't not do well in the heat)

Hybrid fall rye is a scavenger and is a more efficient user of nutrients and water. Rye's root structure is double that of winter wheat with better winter hardiness and much faster early season growth. More details here on rye management: Hybrid Fall Rye 
Fall crops use moisture earlier in the season, provide weed competition and typically avoid heat blasting and fungicide issues such as FHB.

Winter Triticale Seed
We have not done very much with winter triticale in the past and usually have some people asking about it. We did source 1800 bu of Metzger winter triticale so if you need it let me know.
