Below: Hybrid fall rye seeded Oct 26th almost emerged (pic taken last week) Many times I talk to farmers who decide to stop seeding fall crops like winter wheat or hybrid fall rye by a certain date. We have done some late winter crop seeding over the years and it typically works well. I think more farmers should consider it as it can take the pressure off of spring time operations. I think with the use of seed treatments the plant can survive more stress from late planting. We can increase the seeding rate as the season gets later as well to help with healthy spring plant stands. A later seeded crop will mature slightly later the next season. 1 week later seeded may translate into only 1-2 days later maturity next season.
