All Crop Outlook

Chuck Penner of LeftField gave an all crop outlook on January 11th, 2024 at the Sask Mustard AGM in Saskatoon.

• ​Canola: slower exports and none to China recently. In the last 10 months all canola oil crush has been selling to the USA mainly for bio diesel.
• ​Barley is tied to the feed corn landed in western Canada and as much of 80% of feed use in feedlots is corn right now.
  • Trends for feed grains into China may change if they increase yields due to farmers there being allowed to grow GMO corn and soybeans now.
  • Barley exports are below pace as well possibly due to Australia sending barley to China again.
  • ​Barley ending stocks in Canada look to be high...
• Durum - slow export pace and smallish crop in Canada.
  • Turkey still using regular wheat in pasta blends and exporting extra durum.
    Turkish durum crop was only 500,000 mt bigger than normal but they don't need as much so exporting more than normal. Government policy may change but for now its this way.
• Wheat - lowest global ending stocks in 8 years and Canada is on pace for record exports of wheat. Possibly it was the warm fall and limited canola being exported by rail and instead crushed here.
