Winter Barley
Unfortunately we will not be moving forward with the variety as winter hardiness was a concern. We will be trialing another variety that is a 2 row winter barley fall of 2020 and summer of 2021.
KWS Higgins Winter Barley
KWS Higgins winter barley is an exciting opportunity for higher yields and double crop options

- Popular in Europe that has been trialed in Canada
- 6 row feed type
- Medium height with strong straw and good stand ability
- Bushel weight will be better vs spring 6 row barley because it matures much sooner and will have moisture to fill vs a spring 6 row barley on dry conditions
- Very early maturity = spread harvest or silage over more time
- Yield on dry land will be higher than spring seeded barley
- Mildew resistance is rated good
- Rust, scald, leaf spot ratings are medium to good
- Lower FHB disease risk because it flowers very early
- reduced need for fungicides and less quality risk
- Winter hardiness will be a challenge for winter barley. To reduce winter risk we recommend:
- Seed earlier compared to winter wheat or fall rye by a week or more. Call us for more information.
- Use seed treatments including fungicides and insecticides
- Even seed placement so every plant is similar stage
- Seed 3/4 deep so the crown is not to deep but not shallow either
- Higher seeding rates may help minimize risk
