Ultra Early Seeding February Seeding

Update: We seeded the same varieties again on Feb 4th, 2026 and that week soil temperature hit 6C
On January 12th, we seeded AAC Westking CWRS, AAC Oakman VB CWRS, and AAC Frontier Durum beside our winter wheats in our demo plot field. We did have a customer pick up seed this week and seeded a larger field near Taber as well.

Why Are We Seeding Ultra Early?

• We are mimicking Dr Brian Beres research or you can watch a Video of his presentation
• Gain more yield per mm of water
  • 8/10 years earlier seeded does better in S AB on dryland but there can be cycles of dry or wet summers it seems
• Flower ahead of heavy disease timing
• Beat the summer heat for flowering timing
• Avoid seeding winter wheat but get some of the agronomic advantages of a winter wheat with the marketing advantages of a CWRS or Durum
• Spread out workload
• Make sure the last field seeded is early May not mid or late May
• We prepared the field like we did for our winter wheat plots, waited until soil temperature rose to 0 C at seed depth. Soil conditions were perfect for seeding, it was very windy.
