Lygus Bugs and Faba Beans

We get lots of questions about spraying for lygus bugs in faba beans as it can impact grade.
For seed production the black dots on the beans do not impact germination but we do find that if you speed up the pivot mid season and apply less water per pass it can help push them out by watering the field a few times a week or more with less water put down per pass.

Some farms tank mix a fungicide and insecticide together, Matador (lambda-cyhalothrin) is registered on faba bean. We find the lygus move out of canola and into faba as canola flowering stops so there is more risk around mid July. This coincides with when we usually see disease in faba beans show up or is about the last chance to apply a fungicide in faba beans for maximum results. I like to delay fungicide in faba beans until mid podding so the one pass tank mix is the best option I think
