In Southern Alberta fall crops are moving fast.
Winter wheat has some time before in crop sprays are needed, and triticale some time also. Hybrid fall rye is growing fast now and if you are going to do an in crop herbicide you may be getting close from a crop staging standpoint. spraying rye later can cause late tilling in crop and ergot comes to late tillers as there is not as much pollen flying. Many do not use in crop herbicides due to the allelopathic effect of rye on weeds. Seeding early in the fall helps reduce the need for spring herbicides as it can tiller in the fall vs the spring. If you are going to spray your rye, the stage in the picture above is getting pretty close to time. In the past it was said to avoid high amounts of 24D or MCPA but that is less of a concern vs timing. (early spraying mitigates those risks.
