We had a customer near Wainright AB with stems falling over in his crop in 2024. Initially I thought it was sawfly.
Dr Brian Beres helped me confirm that it was hessian fly due to the kinked higher stem cutting. Here is a link to MB ag's page on it: www.gov.mb.ca/agriculture/crops/insects/hessian-fly.html Mustard has another season of good returns relative to other crops.
If you are new to mustard here are some considerations:
New this season: Buteo Start is available on all types of mustard for flea beetles & cutworm protection (as long as ordered early) AAC Yellow 80 - Yellow Mustard - composite (up to 9% advantage) Andante - Yellow Mustard Brown Elite - Hybrid Brown Mustard - hybrid (up to 40% advantage) Centennial - Brown Mustard Cutlass - Oriental Mustard Forge - Oriental Mustard AC Vulcan - Oriental Mustard Mustard Buyers: www.johnstonsgrain.com or view Sask Mustard's Buyers List https://saskmustard.com/grower/mustard-buyers-list/ Wanting more information on growing mustard? details here https://saskmustard.com/ We have mustard seed pricing ready with early pay discounts on now, with a deadline of December 16th so please reach out to Blair at 403-634-4349 (call or text) or [email protected] for mustard seed prices. We had a customer that wanted to compare emergence on Coldfront Winter Wheat that was treated with a Terraxa F4 (fungicide & insecticide) vs bare seed. The pictures below show the results at this current time (late October). The field was planted on September 7th, pictures taken on October 16th. Coldfront with Teraxxa F4 on left, coldfront bare on right Coldfront bare on left, Coldfront with Teraxxa F4 on right
We had 50 varieties of spring cereal plots this season. Lodging was the big challenge in our barley plots impacting yields in unexpected ways. CWRS, GP, SWSW yields were fairly tight and Durum yields were sort of as expected. Again, look at the previous years plots as well as no replications and one season is not great science :) but it is field scale under higher management style.
More details here: https://www.stampseeds.com/spring-cereals-grain-trials.html We have seed cleaned and ready of the below pulse crops and prices set for early pickup. If you would like to have them treated, the seed treatment companies support fall treating as the effectiveness of seed treatment does not wear off until it is in the soil.
Some of these products are carry over inventory but most of the pulses are 2024 crop. We don't have pricing set for most seed yet but if you do want to pickup now we can sort a price out now.
We have a few buyers actively buying in the rye market and it seems to be around $6 per bu picked up in your yard for spot bids.
If you bought rye seed from us and need some contacts, Blair can help you: Cell: 403-634-4349 (calls & text), Office: 403-739-2233 , Email: [email protected] Corn pricing is available now for 2025!

We wanted to compare tonnage plus quality between oats and forage sorghum for double cropping after a milk stage cut on hybrid rye. These plots were planted on June 26th,2024 Forage sorghum came out on top for the second year in a row against oats. One thing is the forage sorghum was not quite ready (75.74% moisture) while oats (60.76 % moisture) were ready which makes them the safest choice to get tonnage off. I also planted KWS Serafino at the same time to see tonnage ability with a full vegetative cut in the fall, it did very well! We wanted to see if we could take barley to grain after a hybrid fall rye boot stage cut - if the timing works out there could be a good possibility!
Blair planted two different varieties (Esma and CDC Durango) on June 2nd,2024 Esma plot averaged out at 140 bushels/acre. CDC Durango plot averaged out at 144 bushels/acre. Each plot was 3 by 10 feet and planted in a good spot of a field These were done in small plots and calculated down to final bushel average. We took forage samples from our demo plots which included barley, soft wheat, triticale and oats. We cut out sections of the plots for yield and quality to compare each variety to each other. Each plot is taken at soft dough.
Barley was taken off August 8,2024 Soft wheat, triticale and oats were taken off August 23rd,2024 Blair Balog, our Seed Specialist has compiled the spring crop forage information in a chart for you to make comparisons from variety to variety and crop type. This in not replicated or scientific data, just side by side on small scale as we cut a 3'x10' spot and sent a sample to Down to Earth Labs to get these results. The plots received a PGR at proper timing this year, barley was still lodged at time of forage cutting, soft wheat and triticale were all standing at time of forage cutting. FB 23618,FB 23619, TR22669 are all experimental lines from the Olds College Field Crop Development Center and not currently licensed in the marketplace Winner of registered varieties in the trials is a new variety for 2025, Alotta GP wheat. This will be an exciting variety for the marketplace! Enchant Community Hall

RSVP if possible: [email protected] We heard lots about sawfly cutting stems late season. For a CWRS our farm CDC Adamant VB (semi solid but the refuge is not a semi solid). For durum AAC Grainland are what we use on our dryland and AAC Stronghold can also be an option. Very early seeding will help you get the field before plants fall down or a winter crop can also help but of course not all of the cereal acres can be first. There have been up's and down's and much growth of the farm, seed sales, offerings of seed varieties, service, and scale! We couldn't have done it without you our customers, as your success is our success. Thank you!
What does being in the pedigreed seed business mean to us?
I haven't noticed this at other elevators yet but from P&H Wilson siding's texts they have a red wheat program for all red wheats (Winter, CPS, GP, CWRS) this is priced very similar to CWRS!
The prices will fluctuate but it may drive more winter wheat acres and maybe more demand for GP reds like the new Alotta (launching this fall!) I feel like the CPS market has dried up a bit as people are either growing the new CRWS varieties that yield like a CPS or the GP reds that can yield up to 20%+ more vs a CWRS P&H Willson Siding's number is 403-381-8710 if you have questions for them on their program. We have seed cleaned and ready of the below pulse crops and prices set for early pickup. If you would like to have them treated, the seed treatment companies support fall treating as the effectiveness of seed treatment does not wear off until it's in the soil.
