Lentil Outlook

20/9/2024

Marlene Boersch provided the lentil market update.
  • Alberta grows about 13% of Canada's lentils and is trending upwards.
  • Lentil yields are trending down over the last 10 years,
  • Canada market share of lentils to our main buyers is dropping, from 80% ish to 40%ish due to other exporting countries
  • Everyone getting trade agreements but Canada
  • Short term pet food market paying up for reds vs exporting, but then Australia coming on and fills in export competition putting pressure on prices.
  • Red lentil stable market going forward this year
    • Hand to mouth markets – (non india) all pipelines are low to 0, so that will use up some supplies filling the pipeline.
    • Australian farmers sell faster off combine, Canada holds and sells later sometimes so buyers go to the ones selling fast.
  • Nothing oversupplied even though multi origins now at play competing with Canada
  • Indian pigeon pea crop can be 50% more this season so may need less green lentils
Trade feels growers are 20-25% sold in lentils.

Market Trends in Foods / Feeds

20/9/2024

  • Total feed volume dropped globally for first time in 20 y
  • Possibility of base level in all products? – Warburtons – health by stealth?
  • Protein or flour products are going to saturate the market, and global competition to our fractionators is increasing.
  • Sustainability goals may encourage more pulses as a feed
  • Lentils following the path of chickpeas in food products trends
    • Faba beans not there yet
  • In Europe, 10% of all new pasta product launches have a pulse flour in them.

Bean & Faba Bean Update

20/9/2024

Chuck Penner gave the update on dry beans and faba beans.
Dry beans stocks to use ratio are still tight this season.

Beans
  • 2024: less white beans, more coloured beans,
  • 75% of beans still to be harvested and Manitoba had a lot of rain at harvest.
  • Inventory of all classes were cleaned up this summer (that’s not normal) so pipeline empty.
  • acres up 24% according to StatsCan
  • Acres may be up next season in beans again

Faba bean
  • acres down 11%
  • 95,000 mt faba bean in 2024 in Canada is the estimate

Marlene Boersch - Mustard & Canary Seed September 2024

19/9/2024

Special crop trends follow cash receipts = farmers follow the $
Lentil acres have climbed a lot since the 1980's but other crops like mustard and canary seed have been flat.

Canary seed 290,900 ac in 2024, up 13.5%
  • Hard to find acres and price discovery today, used to just trad a car or a few cars every so often to get price discovery.
  • Canary exports down 26% over past 10y from Canada

Mustard
  • Acres up 74% over last 3 years
  • Supply up 13% over past year.
  • Overall ac down 5% last season
  • Yields 12-14 bu per ac.
  • 40-50% of acres are yellow mustard
  • Russian mustard acres are down
  • Acres reported by stats can seem much too high according to the trade, 450-500 k acres
  • More dockage in mustard, up to 10% is lost from dockage from total production.
  • Next season will be a problem for mustard acres and bids may not reflect that this winter to get acres = price may go up next fall.
  • Oriental & brown mustard levels are dropping

Chuck Penner - Chickpea & Pea Outlook Sept 2024

19/9/2024

Chickpea
  • increased acres, 1600 lbs per ac
  • Low carry over, so a bigger crop not going to raise supplies as much as pipeline was empty
  • USA crop medium to large
  • Large caliber chickpea prices have come up, Just larges though.
  • 400,000 ac,  so less than estimates, and yields more at 27 bu

Peas
  • Green peas are still filling the supply channels so that’s why the price has moved up even with 38% more acres as pileline was empty
  • Yellow peas - trade thinks 3.2 mmt peas grown in Canada
  • Pea price could climb slightly but not big spikes though winter.
  • Most trade is unsure on market prices goring forward and into next year as what China, and India do relative to Russian crop will change price to us up or down.

JP Jervais - Pulse & Special Crops Convention 2024

19/9/2024

JP Jervais
  • 2% inflation now
  • Interest rates looks like 2 rate cuts yet in 2024, and in 2025 = 4 more rate cuts in Canada
  • Wages growing at a fast pace while unemployment also growing slowly.
  • CA dollar may go up vs US dollar over next year
  • USD at record strength relative to other currencies of the world
  • Most pulse buying countires lost value vs USD, so harder for them to buy from USA, CAN
  • Global supply chains back to normal for most part.
    • Global shipping disruptions due to ship shipping route attacks / changes impacting prices and timelines to Canadian farmers
  • Profitability looks low for 24/25 season for CDN farmers
Long term outlook:
  • Ag productivity is slowing, but still growing. But under 1%
  • Raising productivity only way to meet food gap, emissions gap
  • Carbon footprint of CDN lentils and peas very low vs other sellers.

Stop the Strike

7/9/2024

After the recent railway strike, it always amazes me how much goes on behind the scenes that we as farmers don't see. From advocacy and lobbying such as this website https://stopthestrike.ca to how much just the threat of a strike impacted shipments of all goods including farm goods.
Just the threat of a strike date meant ships were not being sent our way, trains / shipments were being canceled weeks in advance because no one wanted infrastructure stranded or products stranded. Farm groups spent a lot of effort to make sure that the government know how big of a deal this was. Obviously it was a quick strike but even letting it get that far is a big problem.

When Should You Seed Fall Crops?

7/9/2024

Timing is pretty important when seeding a fall crop and Hybrid Rye does not like to be too late, although you can increase rates as you get later in season to compensate. If you are grazing you can seed earlier as you will be resetting the plant.
Below are ideal seeding dates but some exceptions do occur:
  • Hybrid Rye
    • Central or North prairies = Aug 20 - Sept 15
    • Southern prairies = Aug 25 - Sept 20
  • Triticale, Traditional Rye, Winter Wheat
    • Central or North prairies = Aug 20 - Sept 20
    • Southern prairies = Aug 25 - Sept 30
Tadeus Fall Triticale fills in fast when seeded late.

Fall Crop FAQ

7/9/2024

Farmers newer to fall crops have questions!
  • Winter Wheat vs Rye?
    • Rye competes with weeds better in the spring because it grows faster and has the allopathic affect
    • Rye price is often lower (feed, distilling, milling, malting) but the higher yields generally make its net returns better or equal
    • Winter Wheat can be seeded later
    • Rye doesn't suffer from green bridge (wheat / winter wheat can transmit the wheat streak mosaic virus
  • Hybrid Rye vs Traditional:
    • Hybrids will yield about 20-40% more vs Traditional Rye for grain and about 10-20% more for forage
    • The grain market used to price traditional slightly higher vs hybrids for the cover crop market but that should go away now that the F2 market is starting (to authorized dealers)
  • When to seed fall crops?
    • Central or North prairies
      • Aug 20 - Sept 15 for Hybrid Rye
      • Aug 20 - Sept 20 for Winter Wheat & Fall Triticale
    • South prairies
      • Aug 25 - Sept 20 for Hybrid Rye
      • Aug 25 - Sept 30 for Winter Wheat & Fall Triticale
  • Does Rye become a weed?
    • The year following Rye,  grow a non-cereal and make sure the volunteers are controlled well and it will be similar to a Winter Wheat.
  • Allelopathic effect from the volunteer rye?
    • if you have a cover crop or a volunteer crop it can impact your next crop but only if its green so kill your cover crop 7-10 days before seeding a canola crop for example. This can be a benefit when suppressing weeds.
  • What stubble to seed fall crops on?
    • Pulses and oilseeds are easiest to follow, but if you do follow a cereal, make sure the cereal volunteers will not compete in the fall with the fall crop as you can't spray them out in the fall once the fall crop is up.
  • Seeding rates
    • Winter Wheat
      • Dryland in Southern AB we suggest 30 plants per sq foot,
      • Irrigation or more central or North areas = 40 plants per sq foot.
    • Hybrid Fall Rye
      • 1 unit per ac, when seeding early you can use 0.9 and when seeding later 1.2 units per ac may be recommended.
        • 1 unit is 1 million live seeds, unit size can range between 65 lbs - 85 lbs per unit.
  • Should I put fertilizer on in the fall?
    • Winter Wheat can have N applied in fall, or spring, or use a blend of ESN
    • Rye - we like to put all of it on in the fall as rye uses N much earlier in the spring. ESN does not become available fast enough for rye.
  • How much fertilizer for fall crops?
    • Rye we suggest similar rates to spring wheats, its yields can be higher but it is a more efficient user of fertilizer and water.
    • Winter Wheat's yield target is higher vs spring wheat so you may want to increase rates or top dress
